Featured Photo: Barbary Babe with Macaque Mom (Gibraltar; Europe)

With Africa (Morocco) in view to the south and Spain within walking distance to the east, tiny Gibraltar is a unique microcosmic experience. This British territory is famed for its Barbary Macaques (often referred to as Barbary Apes), tail-less monkeys with origins in North Africa. Legend has it that coveted Gibraltar will remain under British rule as long as the macaques remain. We spotted a few moms with babies as we explored the Rock. This pair makes a very sweet picture from a safe distance, but the mother would be ferociously protective if approached —think “soccer mom” on steroids with a great throwing arm and plenty of teeth. Pretty scary, huh?

Featured Photo: Rocky Mountain Runner (Independence Pass, Colorado; USA)

The majestic crags of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains create a natural playground for cyclists, hikers, climbers and runners. This photo was taken on the Linkins Lake Trail off of Independence Pass, during a leg-stretch break on our drive from Denver to Aspen (2012). The runner is my daughter, Hannah.

Alligators were expected.  And mosquitoes.  Everglades National Park wouldn’t be the sort of sauna experience that might normally be followed by a massage and/or pedicure. I presumed primitive. I anticipated hot. A spare stark landscape with slithering surprises. But it was the beautiful birds that most captivated me and my camera during a springtime visit: sub-tropic residents such as this contemplative guy (girl?) sitting sunnyside as its wings dried from a fishing expedition.
