The “Boom Boom Room” at Virgil’s Cafe

When people mention a “hole in the wall” establishment, that usually isn’t a literal description.  But at Virgil’s Cafe in historic Bellevue, Kentucky, there is an actual hole in the wall that you should know about.

Virgil’s Cafe features an enticing menu in an elegant and intimate setting.  It’s casual dining, but you’ll definitely feel at home in a dress and heels (more so, if you’re a female).  The menu changes frequently to take advantage of local ingredients and the chef’s inspirations, but there is enough variety to accommodate most diners and the kitchen is savvy and reponsive to particular dietary needs.  It’s likely that the Andouille sausage (made from scratch) will remain on the menu for a while as it is featured in an episode of “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives” on the Food Network later this month.  Hopefully, the Kentucky hot slaw will remain a constant in the salad category as well.

But the “hole in the wall”?  That would be the “Boom Boom Room”.  This curtained enclave, available by reservation, offers a more romantic and private dining experience to the couple who might like to gaze into one another’s eyes away from the stares of other dining groups.  Securing a meal in this unique niche is worth the mild embarrassment you might feel requesting it by name.

Virgil’s Cafe is a Diner’s Choice winner on Open Table and is described as a “neighborhood gem”.  It’s definitely worth a visit if you happen to be in the Cincinnati area.

Bluewater Grill in Newport Beach

Autumn is fading into its last crunches underfoot. The temperature is on a steady downward swing and all too soon we’ll be factoring in wind chill as a whistling wind pushes through trees bared of buffering foliage. And I’m having a California moment -a longing to turn my face to the sun and breathe in a breeze. Newport Beach was the launching point for last summer’s California trip. There is nothing like an ocean breeze to spin away extraneous thoughts and pare down life to its most lovely essentials.

Bluewater Grill

Dockside seating at the Bluewater Grill gave us a front row view to some impressive vessels. The guest dock also allows for fresh fish deliveries and on-site rentals. Our leisurely lunch included an excellent Manhattan clam chowder, a seared ahi tuna caesar salad and beer battered fish and chips. The latter was mediocre; more batter than fish, but my salad (with wasabi on the side) and our chowders were definitely repeat order items.

The Bluefish Grill has three California locations and is popular with the locals. Valet parking -unless you arrive by sea!

UPDATE:  My passport (renewal) is “in process”. So far, I’m resisting the urge to do more than a daily check on its progress.
